M2 - Unit 3: Legal & Ethical Issues

 Posting Unpublished Work:

Since researchers operate as a team rather than as individuals, determining who owns intellectual property in science is difficult. When it comes to copyright, the College's IP policy specifies when it belongs to you as a student and when it belongs to Imperial or the organisation that is supporting your studies. Before posting your work on social media, make sure it won't:

A patent application may be harmed.

Stop yourself or your boss from publishing the job in the future.

Infringe on the rights of others

Make it clear that your lab conducts animal testing.

Breach a previously agreed-upon confidentiality arrangement

Pose a national security threat

Terms & Conditions:

You agree to the terms and conditions of a social media site when you sign up for it. Make sure you read them to understand what the supplier can do with the material you contribute to their platform and the personal information you provide during registration.

Data Protection:

Personal data (information about an identifiable individual) is protected by data privacy regulations, which prohibit it from being released to the general public. As a result, you should not make personal data available to the public through social media tools, nor should you use social media tools to exchange personal data with collaborators. They are insufficiently safe for this reason.

Freedom of Speech:

Your words are public and can be read by anyone if you tweet, blog, publish, or comment online. This means they could be deemed illegal, incorrect, or offensive. Although the UK usually supports free expression, there are certain limitations (see the Liberty website) and you can be sued for defamation, just like journalists (libel and slander).

Impact on Society:

Since social networking tools are very public, you should think about how what you write and publish online could affect your credibility, Imperial's, your funders', your colleagues', your family's, and people who participate in your research. Don't post something on the internet that might cause you or another individual embarrassment, commercial damage, or anxiety.
